A product of George Washington High School in Charleston, West Virginia, he also went to study at Brown University as well as at the University of Paris. His first appearance on screen happened in the year 1996 when he was cast on the film Childhood’s End by which he played the role Greg Chute.

Soon after, he got lots of acting projects including role portrayals for the TV series Going to California from 2001 to 2002 and True Blood from 2008 to 2014. His portrayal as Sam Merlotte on True Blood, by the away, earned him nominations for Scream Award for Breakout Performance – Male, Screen Actors Guild Awards Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, and Scream Award for the Best Supporting Actor.
