Michael Fred Phelps II was born on June 30, 1985 in Towson, Maryland. He started swimming when he was seven. Amazingly, it became an effective outlet for his diagnosed ADHD condition, where, after how many years later, made way for him to be highly recognized in the world of swimming. He is considered as the most decorated Olympian of all time. Aside from the pool, he also takes time to interact with young children after his practices. He was a USA Olympic team member in 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012. He also holds the records for most Olympic gold medals (18).
Yes, he is a swimmer, but apart from swimming, he is also into unique weight training workouts. He exercises six hours a day and six days a week with incredible persistence and dedication. When he’s training in the pool, where he spends most of his time, he swims 80 km each week, equating to 13 km each day. He also combines his dry-land training with a lot of sport-specific functional training.
There’s no surprise when it comes to the enormous amount of food that he takes into his body, especially when he is training. This is because the speed of his metabolism requires him to eat a lot. In an interview, he made mention that his breakfast usually involves three fried egg sandwiches with a lot of cheese, lettuce, tomato, fried onions, and mayonnaise. He also drinks two cups of coffee, and eats a five egg omelet, one bowl of grits, which are a maize porridge, three slices of French toast with powdered sugar, and three chocolate chip pancakes. For lunch, he had one pound of pasta with tomato sauce, two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayonnaise on white bread, plus energy drinks that equal around 1,000 calories. His dinner often includes another pound of pasta with sauce, a whole pizza of six or eight slices, and more energy drinks.
Nonetheless, Michael emphasizes the importance of sleep to allow his body recover after intense workouts. He said in one of his interviews, “It’s really important that my body gets enough rest so that I’m ready to go for my next race or training session.”
