She is famously recognized for being the only deaf actress to ever acquire the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Her appearance on screen started in the year 1986 when she played the role Sarah Norman on the film Children of a Lesser God. The film earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama. She later on appeared on the TV series Reasonable Doubts, playing the role Tess Kaufman. In 1993, she landed the role Mayor Laurie Bey on Picket Fences where she was nominated for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series as well as for Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Meanwhile, she is widely recognized for her significant roles on TV series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Switched at Birth.
