Retired German figure skater Katarina Witt was born on December 3, 1965 in Staaken, East Germany. Also known as “Kati” in her homeland, she became prominent for her series of success in the chosen sport. She won two Olympic gold medals for East Germany which she achieved in 1984’s Sarajevo Olympics and 1988’s Calgary Olympics. From 1984 to 1988, she experienced championships four times. She also became the World silver medalist twice from 1982 to 1986. Because of her impressive skating skill, she was hired to act and play a significant role in the film Carmen on Ice in 1989. The said film earned her an Emmy Award. Few years after, she took a hiatus on skating but eventually came back in 1994 under the guidance of her coach Jutta Müller. Last year, she appeared as the main cast for the made-for-TV film Der Feind in meinem Leben where she portrayed as a figure skater.
Now that Katarina is no longer active in skating, she stays fit by regularly exercising and visiting the gym. For her, keeping a fit and healthy body makes her feel good. “Being convinced that you can take on anything, because you feel so strong. That is a great feeling – when you feel fit,” she said.
And of course, she practices a healthy and balanced diet. Although sometimes, this athletic personality could not help but eat her ‘cheat foods’. “My real weakness is avoiding something sweet, such as German fruitcake, every time I have a coffee. Apart from coffee, I drink lots of water, but sometimes it’s not enough– I get headaches from being dehydrated.”
