Alek Wek is a South Sudanese British model and designer. She was born on April 16, 1977 in Bahr al Ghazal, Sudan. She is the seventh daughter out of nine children of parents Akuol and Athian. Her family went to London when she was 14 after she recovered psoriasis. During her stay in London, she attended at the London’s College of Fashion and concentrated fashion business and technology. Eventually her life changed when she was noticed by a modeling scout.
Her first screen highlight happened when she was hired to take part in Tina Turner’s “GoldenEye” music video in 1995. After that, she immediately signed with Ford Models and started to appear in print ads for prominent designers including Moschino, Clinique, Victoria’s Secret, Shiatzy Chen, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Jasper Conran, Armani, Givenchy, and many others. She also appeared in several magazine covers such as in Elle, i-D, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, etc.
Alek is not a gym freak or a fan of exercises. She thinks that her skinny figure is already enough to flaunt. She also does not practice any special type of diet. As a person who came from a place where she saw many people starving due to poverty, she thinks practicing a diet and “choosing not to eat” is illogical. She takes care of her body by not restricting herself to food and not punishing herself with serious exercises.
