Nina Davuluri is an Indian American beauty pageant titleholder born on April 20, 1989 in Syracuse, New York to parents Sheela Davuluri and Chowdary Davuluri. A student of Michigan State University, she joined an Indian dance club called Maya during her student years. It was in 2011 when she graduated from The University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA) with a B.S. in Brain, Behavior & Cognitive Science. After she graduated, she relocated to New York together with her family and eventually took up nine pre-med courses at Le Moyne College. In 2006, she joined the Miss Michigan’s Outstanding Teen and won the competition. Later on she became the second runner up of the Miss New York 2012. This year, she was crowned the Miss America 2014 and gained prominence as the first Indian American and second Asian American to acquire the Miss America crown.
How did Nina prepare for the beauty pageant? Well, according to her, she’s done a great effort going to the gym. “I strength training every day and then cardio at night,” she said in an interview. “So it was two-a-days and then after I won Miss New York, it changed significantly because I just didn’t have the time to spend in the gym. So I had one hour a day and I did either FlyWheel, CrossFit or Barry’s Bootcamp. Those were my go-to’s. And on off days, I enjoy doing yoga so I would do that just to stay flexible.”
She also followed a high-protein and low-carb diet. “In preparation for Miss New York and Miss America, I was doing a lot of high protein, low carb,” she said.
And hey, she’s got some diet tips for us. Here’s what she told the Women’s Health Mag: “If you fall off track and scarf down an unhealthy meal, that’s fine. Eat better the next meal, not the next day.”
