Monica Seles is a professional tennis player known as the former Yugoslav world no. 1 player. She was born on December 2, 1973 in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia to parents Ester and Karolj Seles. She started playing tennis when she was five years old, practicing the said sport under the guidance of her trainer which was her father. When she was 11, she successfully dominated the Orange Bowl tournament held in Miami, Florida. Her success in the said competition took the attention of Nick Bollettieri, a renowned tennis coach. Soon after, she trained for about two years at Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy and officially played her professional tennis match when she was 14. She further gained notoriety when she joined the 1990 French Open and achieved her first Grand Slam win. Nowadays, she is highly regarded as one of the most successful tennis players in the world, being labeled as the 13th greatest player of all time (men and women) by the Tennis US magazine.
