Melissa Etheridge - CelebHealthy_comMelissa Lou Etheridge is an American rock singer, songwriter, guitarist, and activist. She was born on May 29, 1961 in Leavenworth, Kansas. A popular singer in the field of pop and folk-rock music, she is also known for her involvement as a gay and lesbian activist since she came out in public in the year 1993. Prior to becoming a popular artist, she undergone failure from the beginning when her first recording attempt was rejected by Island Records. Four days after being refused by the said recording company, she was able to attain a self-titled debut album. After her modest success, she released a number of albums including “Brave and Crazy” and “Never Enough”. In 1996, she won the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year and took a career hiatus afterwards. She came back in 1999, releasing another album called “Breakdown”. In 2004, she was diagnosed of having a breast cancer but was able to perform in 2005 at the Grammy Awards.

One thing that Melissa learned about her condition was the importance of lifestyle changes. “It’s ALL about change,” she expressed in one of her interviews. “People who make a change in their lives are the ones who survive. I’ve changed my eating, and my whole attitude toward food. I’m not going to feed my houseplants Diet Coke and Doritos — that’s gonna kill them. So I probably shouldn’t feed myself that kind of food, either. Now I look at a vegetable, that hopefully has come from my garden or as local as possible, I eat it, and my body works. I also started walking, stretching, doing yoga when I can. Keeping active and keeping in touch with my body. And I’m on a quest to get rid of all the stress in my life — that’s an ongoing spiritual journey.”

And her secret to stay happy? Breathe and relax! She said, “Breathe! A lot of breathing. It’s the key to relaxing, wherever I am. I’m on a mission to just BE relaxed throughout my whole day, not just taking time out to relax every once in a while. It’s all about when I do feel the stress coming up, instantly identifying it and moving out of the situation or thinking about it differently — responding rather than reacting.”
